Details

Natiyalaya is a dance school in Stavanger, founded by Rammiyawanie «Ramya» Balasubramaniam. Since then she has taught students in the Stavanger area in the classical South Indian dance form Bharatanatyam.

Bharatanatyam has hundreds of years old roots from Tamil Nadu in southern India. Traditionally, the dance performances were performed by solo dancers, especially women, and expressed Hindu religious and spiritual themes. Today, bharatanatyam of both women and men, often in groups, is often combined with other types of classical dance forms and folk dances, expressing both religious and modern themes. Like other forms of art, bharatanatyam is constantly evolving.

Bharatanatyam combines a graceful and feminine dance style with a more energetic and masculine style. It is often distinguished between pure dance without narrative (nritta), dramatic or miming dance (natya), and a combination of these techniques (nritya).

The dance form is traditionally taught by a teacher (guru) to students (shishya). Ramya teaches around 56 shishyas between 5-27 years with parents who have backgrounds from India and Sri Lanka. Students receive weekly training and tuition, and take annual exams held by the Oriental Examination Board London (OEBL).

The dance school is open to anyone interested in Indian classical dance and culture.
